Twitter is losing millions of users, according to report

Twitter shares fall amid concern over falling user numbers Twitter says abuse reports have fallen by 16 percent

It's possible the company chose to do so because the daily active user number went up year over year while the number of monthly users went down.

"Twitter's pivot to mDAUs (monetizable daily active users) helps ad buyers better understand the potential reach for their advertising", said Aaron Goldman, chief marketing officer at 4C Insights.

Shares in Twitter have fallen 10% after the social media company's revenue forecast fell short of expectations.

Those costs could weigh on margins and future earnings, other analysts say. In its guidance, the company offered a revenue range of $715 million to $775 million against analyst consensus of $764.9 million, according to Refinitiv data published by CNBC.

Twitter shares tanked almost 10 percent Thursday after the company warned of weaker-than-expected revenue and said it will stop reporting its closely watched monthly active user metrics.

That compares to Facebook's 1.5 billion daily users and Snapchat's 186 million.

The social media company reported 321 million monthly active users in the fourth quarter, a decrease of 9 million year-on-year and 5 million lower than the previous quarter.

Twitter shares fall amid concern over falling user numbers

Twitter attributed the drop in MAUs to its purge of fake accounts, trolls, and hate mongers from its platform, and claims it's seen a 16% drop in abuse reports from the year-ago quarter.

Twitter's 24 percent year-over-year revenue increase (26 percent on constant currency basis) makes it clear the company is able to show revenue growth despite a declining user base, according to eMarketer Senior Analyst Jasmine Enberg.

The switch to a monetisable daily user count enables Twitter to put a more positive spin on how it's doing, but even there, Twitter gives off the impression that it's trying to paint a slightly rosier picture than reality - at least when it comes to the competition.

Total advertising revenue surged 23 percent to $791 million in the quarter, with more than half of that figure coming from video ads placed by corporate clients.

Twitter, for the first time, revealed the number of its monetizable daily active users: 126 million. So, where does that it leave Twitter in increasing DAUs from a shrinking pool, points out R.W. Baird analyst Colin Sebastian, who has a Neutral rating and $35 price target on Twitter shares.

Excluding some items, Twitter reported quarterly profit of 31 cents per share, beating the average estimate of 25 cents.
