Theresa May offers ministers 'meaningful vote' if no Brexit deal

Downing Street attempted to defuse the row after the Prime Minister failed to rule out further talks on a customs union in a letter to Jeremy Corbyn, the Labour leader.

International Trade Secretary Liam Fox said Labour's proposals were "not workable" while Boris Johnson accused Mr Corbyn of trying to trap the Government in a "toxic" Brexit.

May wants to win over lawmakers in her Conservative Party with changes relating to the Northern Irish border, but the EU has refused to reopen that part of the deal and instead wants May to pursue a compromise with the main opposition Labour Party by agreeing closer UK-EU ties.

In her response in the letter, the Prime Minister said she wanted the Tory and Labour teams to consider "alternative arrangements" to the Irish backstop.

Mrs Leadsom said there was "no chance" Mrs May would adopt Mr Corbyn's "view of the world", adding: "The Prime Minister has been absolutely clear we're leaving the EU, we're leaving the customs union, we're leaving the single market".

The frontbencher refused to say what the cut-off date would be for the necessary legislation to get through the Commons to allow the United Kingdom to leave the European Union as planned on March 29. It ensures continuity in our trade relations after the United Kingdom leaves the European Union and lays the foundations for our future relations.

"By getting the changes we need to the backstop; by protecting and enhancing workers" rights and environmental protections; and by enhancing the role of Parliament in the next phase of negotiations I believe we can reach a deal that this House can support'.

DIT says that with the agreement the British auto industry, which has consistently warned against a no-deal Brexit, could avoid up to £8m a year in tariff charges on their exports that would apply if the agreement had not been reached.

"We have got to put a hard stop into this running down the clock", Starmer told The Sunday Times. 'They will just try to trap Theresa May.

"I think it must be pretty obvious that if you are going to have a time limit to the backstop, and I think that would be a very good thing, it's got to fall before the next election".

Mrs Leadsom said: "I think she's making quite clear that what Corbyn is demanding is actually not as good as what the Prime Minister's deal is offering".

The Leave campaign figurehead was speaking as Brexit Secretary Stephen Barclay prepared for talks with European Union chief negotiator Michel Barnier as the Government stepped up efforts to secure changes to the backstop, which is created to keep the Irish border open after the UK's withdrawal.

At the meeting, Department for Trade officials were probed on the pledge by Mr Fox that he would sign free trade agreements to replicate the EU's 40 existing deals with countries around the world.

May will ask lawmakers on Thursday to reaffirm that they support her bid to renegotiate the backstop, a government source said.
