The Thai political party that nominated a princess as its candidate for prime minister could be banned from a general election in March after an activist said today he would file a petition seeking its dissolution.

Thailand's Election Commission has ruled a princess out of next month's election as uncertainty hangs over the fate of the political party which tried to nominate her as its candidate for prime minister.

Reungkrai Leekijwatana, an official with the Thai Raksa Chart party, holds a copy of Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-Ocha's candidacy application as he speaks to members of the media at the office of the Election Commission in Bangkok, Thailand, on Monday, Feb. 11, 2019.

Thai Raksa Chart's Executive Chairman Chaturon Chaisaeng declined to comment on Sunday on the request to disband the party.

Since Thaksin was ousted by a military coup in 2006, Thailand's establishment has had little success in trying to weaken his political machine with constitutional amendments, court rulings and changes to the electoral system.

"Many people were unhappy" about the princess's candidacy "as it aimed to intrude the monarchy into political life", said Srisuwan Janya, secretary general of the Association for the Protection of the Constitution, calling for the resignation of the responsible for the Thai Raksa Chart.

In an Instagram post Saturday, the princess, without mentioning her brother or her dashed political plans, thanked her supporters for their "love and kindness" and expressed a desire to see the country expand rights and opportunities for citizens.

Members of the Phalang Pracharat party - which is aligned with the military - were jubilant following the weekend's upheaval and its party leaders took to the streets, campaigning in a 60-vehicle convoy, to tout their tradition-abiding credentials.

"Rumours.? We're investigating. Fake news", he told reporters at Government House.

On Monday junta chief Prayut on Monday was forced to dismiss rumours of an impending coup as "fake news".

Thailand has been a constitutional monarchy since 1932.

Mr Prayut has agreed to stand for premier after the election and is aided by an army-scripted constitution.

But critics say he has personalised power and outstayed his welcome with a public wearied by his finger-jabbing style.

The new king previous year named a new army chief, Apirat Kongsompong, from a faction rivaling that of Prayut and his junta allies.

Recent days have seeded unease, with the first election in eight years now seemingly dependent on behind-the-scenes power plays by the elite.

Thai Raksa Chart is one of several pro-Thaksin parties contesting the election. Riot police units were on high alert in Pichit province, north of Bangkok, where the princess was due to visit later this week, according to Matichon newspaper.

Shortly after the king's statement she posted again without addressing the issue directly, simply thanking Thais for their support and saying that she wanted Thailand to "move forward and become admired and accepted by the global community".
