The company is taking action against the use of ad blockers and has updated its terms of service to reflect this.

Spotify is on one of its most important turning points. However, when you use the service without paying, Spotify relies on the ads to make money and pay artists' royalties.

The latest update to Spotify's Terms of Service includes a serious warning for free users who turned to gimmicks like ad blockers to listen to music online.

In March, The Verge reported that 2 million users were dodging ads with certain blocking apps and accounts. If you try to block ads with a free account anyway, you may risk losing it.

According to the new rules, "circumventing or blocking advertisements" as well as "creating or distributing tools designed to block advertisements" is now prohibited. Any account with suspicious or abnormal activity on this front will be red flagged.

For a person who loves music, that meant losing heaps and heaps of playlists, saved items, and other content.

After the policy takes effect on March 1st, the audio streaming giant can block accounts caught using ad block programs without warning.

"This is a win-win: users benefit from an improved experience that allows them to choose the ads they want to engage with", Spotify said at the time of release. The company aims to achieve it with recent acquisitions of podcast companies Gimlet Media and Anchor.

"The format is really evolving and while podcasting is still a relatively small business today, I see incredible growth potential for the space and for Spotify in particular", said Spotify CEO Daniel Ek.
