US President Donald Trump said that he won't meet his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping ahead of a trade deal deadline on March 2 when American tariffs on Chinese products are slated to increase.

White House Trade Adviser Larry Kudlow tells Fox Business that Trump does expect to meet with Xi at some point in the future, but right now, it's up in the air. While being asked whether there would be a meeting in a near-term outlook (in the next month or so), Trump appeared to be baffling when responding, "Not yet". The remarks of the president confirmed that there will be no meeting between the two leaders before the deadline and it also implies that the hope of a quick trade pact between them is in peril.

CNBC first reported Thursday that Trump may not meet with Xi before March 1, citing a senior administration official. Several rounds have taken place since Trump and Xi agreed to a 90-day halt on tariff increases past year at the G-20 summit, and additional discussions are scheduled for next week.

His position, together with a threat to raise tariffs on more Chinese imports on March 2, may be a USA tactic to extract concessions from China, especially in structural areas such as alleged intellectual property theft and forced technology transfer.

"At some point the two presidents will meet, that is what Mr. Trump has been saying".
