Today marks the fortieth anniversary of the Islamic Revolution in Iran - the year-plus struggle, ending in February 1979, that resulted in the ouster of the Shah and the ascendance of a zealous Islamist theocracy that has ever since been in a perpetual state of cold war with the broader West.

On Feb. 11 that year, Iran's military stood down after days of street battles, allowing the revolutionaries to sweep across the country while the government of USA -backed Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi resigned and the Islamic Republic was born.

Along with the chants "Death to America" and banners bearing slogans calling for "Death to Israel", Monday's marches were also a backdrop to the military's display of Iranian-made missiles, which authorities showcase every year during anniversary celebrations.

"We have not asked and will not ask for permission to develop different types of missiles", Rouhani told tens of thousands gathered at Tehran's Azadi (Freedom) square.

Iran was determined to expand its military power and ballistic missile program despite mounting pressure from hostile countries to curb Iran's defensive work, state TV reported Rouhani as saying.

A number of Israeli and American flags were set on fire by the crowds.

Washington and its Arab allies have viewed Iran with great suspicion since the Islamic Revolution, fearing Khomeini's radical ideology would inspire militants across the Middle East.

The celebrations included several instance of muscle flexing, including the launch and test of new missiles, which would put Israel squarely within precise range of the Iranian armed forces.

Chants of "Death to America" and "Death to Israel" can commonly be heard in Iranian demonstrations of nationalist fervor, with this one being no exception. Trump also reestablished USA economic sanctions against Iran.

The large turnout in state-sponsored rallies, in which USA and Israeli flags were burned, came as Iranians face mounting economic hardships many blame on the country's clerical leaders.

"After 40 years, the Islamic Republic of Iran has failed to fulfill its promises to uphold and safeguard the rights of its citizens", Bolton tweeted Monday morning.

He said, "We will not let America become victorious.Iranian people have and will have some economic difficulties but we will overcome the problems by helping each other".

The rallies on the national holiday of "Bahman 22nd" began at 9 am local time in more than 1,000 cities and towns as well as 10,000 villages across Iran.

Iranians burn flags of the United States during commemorations of the 40th anniversary of Islamic Revolution in the capital Tehran on February 11, 2019.

He compared the USA sanctions and economic hardships to "riding a bicycle when someone puts a stick in the wheels" but pointed to advances in other fields as more than making up for them. He said, "The United States does not have the courage to shoot a single bullet at us".

Many people carried pictures of Khomeini, who died in 1989, and Iran's current Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
