Diet drinks can cause stroke in post-menopausal woman

Oddly enough it was bad laboratory technique- combined with poor hygiene- that led to the discovery of several of today's top artificial sweeteners. The question marks over diet fizzy drinks are nothing new, with many expressing concern that the sweeteners involved can cause a series of health issues if drank in large amounts.

Drinking two or more diet beverages of any kind per day has been linked to an elevated risk of blood clot-related strokes, heart attacks, and early death in women over 50, said the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association in a new study.

"While we respect the mission of these organizations to help prevent conditions like stroke and dementia, the authors of this study acknowledge that their conclusions do not - and can not - prove cause and effect".

The risk was highest for women with no history of heart disease or diabetes. They were also 16 percent more likely to die prematurely from any cause. During that time - at the three-year mark - all the women were asked to indicate how frequently they consumed diet sodas and diet fruit drinks over a three-month period.

Although the researchers discoverd a link between the drinks and stroke and heart disease, the study did not examine the specific types of artificially sweetened beverages and can not determine which ingredients are not healthy. Of the participants, 5.1% said they consumed at least diet beverages per day.

Researchers found that compared with those who did not drink fizzy drinks, people who drank one to six artificially sweetened drinks a week had twice the risk of stroke. The risk was highest for obese and African American women.

Soon after, the research drew criticism given the collected data did not distinguish between the types of artificial sweeteners used in the drinks.

It turns out that drinking multiple diet drinks daily may not be a very good idea for post menopausal women.

But it states that water is the best choice for a no-calorie drink.

That increased risk is particularly concerning, since most of these strokes were in smaller blood vessels in the brain, says Yasmin Mossavar-Rahmani, associate professor of clinical epidemiology and population health at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, who led the study.

While the results do not suggest that diet drinks directly cause strokes, researchers said the association raises alarms about how artificial sweeteners might be affecting the body.

This isn't the first study to bring diet drinks into the spotlight.

The new study "adds to the evidence that limiting use of diet beverages is the most prudent thing to do for your health", Rachel Johnson, emeritus professor of nutrition at the University of Vermont and chair of AHA's science advisory group on the topic, said in the release.
