Changes in algae will turn some seas a more brilliant blue

Half the world's oceans will change colour as global warming plays havoc with the spread of microscopic marine algae, according to a new study.
Dutkiewiczsaid oceans around the world are likely already changing in colour, but the changes are likely too small for us to detect with the naked eye.
Researchers say the colour changes are down to the effect of climate change on populations of tiny water-dwelling organisms, known as phytoplankton, that convert sunlight into chemical energy through photosynthesis, as well as effects on levels of other colourful components of the oceans. They also simulated how phytoplankton absorbs and reflects light, learning that climate change will effectively alter the ocean's coloring near the surface. Greener areas, such as those near the poles today, may turn deeper shades of green as warmer temperatures cause blooms of phytoplankton.
The existing model was altered to allow it to estimate the specific wavelengths of light that would be absorbed, and those that would be reflected back out by the ocean depending on the quantity and diversity of organisms that are present in the body of water. The deeper blue regions will indicate less phytoplankton and therefore less marine life. These unabsorbed wavelengths of light are reflected away from the molecules, making them appear blue.
"Sunlight will come into the ocean, and anything that's in the ocean will absorb it, like chlorophyll", Dutkiewicz says.
Importantly, she said, the shift in reflectance of blue/green light appeared to give an earlier indication of changes to phytoplankton than estimates of the amount of chlorophyll present, a measure now used to monitor phytoplankton levels.
Some might argue the color of climate change is red - the color that most often marks dramatic temperature increases on climate maps.
Washington Wizards' $235 million injury nightmare, John Wall The Wizards have tried to build a roster around him, and Wall's $170-million, four-year contract extension kicks in next season . The Wizards say Wall is expected to return to full basketball activity in approximately 12 months from the time of the surgery.
For their study, the researchers developed a model simulating the growth and interactions of different phytoplankton species, and ran simulations based on the planet warming by 3C.
The group tweaked a computer model that it has used in the past to predict phytoplankton changes with rising temperatures and ocean acidification.
"Other things will absorb or scatter it, like something with a hard shell".
It looks at how the sea's colour might change if the global temperature would have gone up to 3 degrees celcius by 2100. "But the change in the colour of the ocean will be one of early warning signals that we really have changed our planet".
An MIT study is reporting that by the end of the 21st century, 50 percent of the world's ocean, will be a different color. But using those images to look at reflected light alone, the researchers in the new study could distinguish what is specifically due to climate change.
"It could be potentially quite serious", Dutkiewicz added, referring to the change in color in the oceans.
According to the model, areas in the subtropics will become even more blue due to less algae - which could also mean less sea life as algae is the main meal for creatures in the ocean.
During the 2011 season, California played Pac-12 games in AT&T Park while their home stadium in Berkley was under renovation. The Raiders also considered sharing Levi Stadium in Santa Clara with the Niners, but that backup plan failed to materialize.
Through the first two-and-a-half seasons of his career, Matthews has 178 points, with 97 of those points coming on goals. Matthews joins fellow Toronto youngster William Nylander who was also signed by the Maple Leafs long term in December.
The coroner's report lists the cause of death as "acute intracranial hemorrhage due to history of blunt force trauma". A 79-year-old woman was killed when a foul ball struck her in the head at a Dodgers game during the 2018 season.

Crude oil prices have also moderated sharply over the last six weeks, which could push down headline inflation rate even further. Rajiv Kumar, vice chairman of government think-tank NITI Aayog, said the bank should act to help spur "higher growth rates".
Needing an imposing 220 for victory on Wednesday night, India were all out for just 139 in the final over of the match. Hardik Pandya and Krunal Pandya became the only second pair of brothers to play for India in a same T20I match.
After placing the ball on the bank, Fowler walked up to the green to survey the shot, when the ball rolled into the water. Fowler opened with four birdies in six holes and navigated a hard two-putt on the par-4 18th hole to reach 20-under 193.

Kings send Iman Shumpert to Rockets in 3-team trade with Cavs
For the Cavs, they're scooping up yet another future draft pick for taking on bad contracts and sending out a useful bench scorer. Knight has two seasons, including 2019, and about $30 million left on the five-year, $70 million deal he signed with the Suns.
Why women's grey matter ages better than men's
But researchers have understood little about how brain metabolism differs between men and women. The discovery was made during brain surgery on a patient who was awake under local anaesthetic.
More Titanfall coming this year
With that success, it's not uncommon to receive a ton of fan feedback, with cross-play being on the minds of many players. We absolutely are looking into that in the context of Apex , and we'll be looking at that across our portfolio over time.

It contained photos of sea lions in a bay and a video of a mother sea lion and cub frolicking in the shallows. The group has promised to return the USB in exchange for a helping hand in their research from the owner.
