Apple declares war on enterprise customers

While Google has its own operating system, Android, a large number of the company's nearly 100,000 employees use iPhones for their work, and the firm releases much of its software on both Android and Apple'siOS.
Facebook said Wednesday it was working with Apple to correct the problem and get its certificate restored.
On Tuesday, uncovered a Facebook Research VPN app that was to its users via Apple's Enterprise Developer Program. These include early versions of Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and other beta apps, along with one used by Facebook employees for transportation. Yes, the OS is more popular internationally, but it's worth bringing up because it's also easy to forget that of Facebook's 2.3 billion users, the US is less than one-tenth of that total. But the company seemed confident it would quickly regain its access.
While Apple's action can be appreciated from a privacy and safety perspective, it also underscores the exceptional power the company holds over its hardware and software ecosystem. However, Facebook was abusing the system to distribute the iOS apps to consumers, Apple said.
This punishment sent Facebook's developers scrambling. "To be clear, this didn't have an impact on our consumer-facing services", a Facebook spokesperson told TechCrunch. This further clears that Apple will soon restore the search giant's enterprise development certificate. The CEOs of both companies have taken shots at the other via public remarks before, but this week saw something remarkable - Apple blocked Facebook's ability to work on beta versions of Facebook iOS apps internally as punishment for the creepy app you may have heard about that Facebook installed on some people's phones to monitor everything they do.
Apple didn't return a request for comment on the restoration of the Enterprise Certificate.
"Apple's view is that we violated their terms by sideloading this app", Canahuati stated.
Apple stripped Facebook of key developer privileges it needs to test its products on the iPhone as a result. The app was a voluntary download, with users 13-to-35 receiving compensation in exchange for allowing Facebook - and possibly 3rd party app developers - to track almost all their smartphone activity. Onavo's findings helped Facebook executives predict which apps were rising and trending across App Stores.
Just one day after its Facebook report, a investigation uncovered a similar research program.
Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg also defended the app recently in an interview with CNBC stating: "The important thing is that the people involved in that research project knew they were involved and consented". The program is intended for companies to distribute in-house apps among employees, and by using it to deliver apps to the public, Facebook broke Apple's rules.
Smaller developers have to play by Apple's strict rules, so it's encouraging to see the same ones applied to tech giants, he said.
