The woman from Xiamen, on China's east coast, knew something was wrong when she woke up and couldn't hear her boyfriend's voice, MailOnline reported citing AsiaWire.

The Daily Mail reports that one night, Chen went to bed after feeling nauseated and experiencing ringing in her ears.

A woman in China was recently diagnosed with a rare hearing-loss condition that prevents her from hearing men's voices.

The next morning, an ear, nose and throat specialist at Qianpu Hospital told Ms. Chen that she had a form of low-frequency hearing loss known as reverse-slope hearing loss.

Dr. Lin Xiaoqing, a woman doctor who treated Ms Chen, said the patient was able to hear her when she spoke but couldn't hear a male patient.

Fiat Chrysler Will Pay $800 Million to Settle Emissions Cheating Claims
The settlement is the second between the USA government and an automaker over allegations of cheating on diesel emissions. The settlement is not expected to outline any criminal charges, according to ABC News .

The doctors believe the condition - called reverse-slope hearing loss, or low-frequency hearing loss - was brought on by stress, as Ms Chen had been working late under stressful conditions and wasn't getting enough sleep before her hearing suddenly deteriorated.

Anyone who suffers from low frequency hearing loss, generally, can't hear noises that have a frequency of 2,000 Hz or below. And while that might seem enviable to some, the hearing loss could carry serious medical repercussions.

In North America, only about 3,000 people are diagnosed with this super-rare condition.

The good news is that when RSHL is detected quickly, chances are good that the hearing loss can be reversed, Kraskin said. According to audiologyhears.com, reverse slope hearing loss (or RSHL) derives its name from the fact that low frequencies are affected but not high ones. It's not just male voices they struggle with but any particularly low sound, including voices over the phone, the hum of a vehicle, and thunder.

Low frequency hearing loss can be very unsafe for people as it can affect their ability to hear things like the low hum of an oncoming auto. By 2050, that figure is expected to hit over 900 million. Sudden hearing loss, Ménière's disease and viral infection are also identified as causes of RSHL. Instead of waking up with a newfound ability to hear women's thoughts, à la Mel Gibson (or Taraji P. Henson for 2019's gender-switch take on the film), you wake up having lost the ability to hear men, full stop.
