UK PM May: Failure to Back Her Brexit Plan Would Be ‘Catastrophic’

Just days before the critical Commons vote, the Transport Secretary said: 'People have to think long and hard about how they are going to vote.

Just days before the critical vote, Mr Grayling, who campaigned to leave the European Union, told the Daily Mail: "People have to think long and hard about how they are going to vote".

"Doing so would be a catastrophic and unforgivable breach of trust in our democracy", May said.

A Labour MP for a constituency that voted to leave the European Union admits he is prepared to "lose his seat" in order to support cancelling Brexit.

Meanwhile, two of the biggest donors to the Leave campaign said they believed Brexit would eventually be abandoned by the Government and that the United Kingdom would stay in the EU.

MPs continue to be divided on the plans, with a number of pro-Remainers calling for Mrs May's deal to be voted down, and some ardent Leavers pushing for the same result to ensure a no-deal Brexit.

The Prime Minister said failing to deliver what the public voted for in the referendum would be "unforgivable" and undermine democracy.

Mr Barclay told Marr: "What recent events have shown, with events over the last week with what happened on the legal advice where the government was forced to act in a way it didn't want to, is the uncertainty in terms of what will happen in the House has increased". "My message to Parliament this weekend is simple: It is time to forget the games and do what is right for our country".

Her stark warning came as Downing Street said it was "extremely concerned" about a backbench plot to change Commons rules to enable backbench motions to take precedence over Government business if Mrs May's deal falls.

Under the rebels' plan, reported in the Sunday Times, the government could lose control of parliamentary business, which could threaten Brexit legislation and its ability to govern.

Defeat will leave Britain staring at an exit on March 29 without a deal, unless the country's feuding politicians can agree on another plan.

The news comes as former Conservative prime minister Sir John Major called for Mrs May to halt Brexit, as it would be "morally reprehensible" to leave without a deal.

Mrs May was boosted on Thursday by two Tory backbenchers - her former policy adviser George Freeman, and Trudy Harrison - indicating they would back her deal as well as by a call from Japanese PM Shinzo Abe for the United Kingdom to avoid a no-deal. Every single household - rich or poor - would be worse off for many years to come.

On Monday the debate on the meaningful vote on Mrs May's deal will resume for a fourth day.

"And Brexit paralysis ultimately could lead to no Brexit", he told the BBC.

But former Brexit minister Dominic Raab said Britain should be prepared to leave with no arrangement in place.
