The vehicle crashed on a road between the cities of Baracoa and Guantanamo. The region is mountainous with winding roads.

The bus was carrying 18 Cubans and 22 tourists from Britain, the Netherlands, France, Mexico and Canada, according to Cuban media.

Officials were working to identify the dead.

Five others are in a critical condition following the accident in the east on Thursday afternoon.

Global Affairs Canada told Daily Hive it is aware of the bus crash and said, "our thoughts are with all those injured and the loved ones of those who died in this tragic crash".

A Frenchman and a German woman were also among the four tourists killed in the accident, along with three Cubans, the Venceremos newspaper said.

The Cubans were two men, aged 32 and 47, and a 34-year-old woman.

This is the fourth major bus accident in Cuba in a month and the nation's roads are known to be lacking in light, narrow and often poorly maintained. Past year in all of Cuba there were over 11,000 auto accidents on their poorly-conditioned highways.
