Trump Cites Indian-Origin Cop's Murder To Make Case For Border Wall

In a bid to convince Americans to support his demand for a $5.7 billion wall on the southern border, US President Donald Trump cited the murder of Indian-origin policeman Ronil Ron Singh, who was shot and killed during a traffic stop on December 26 allegedly by an illegal immigrant.

Calling the immigration matter "a crisis of the heart and soul", Trump said the U.S. is "out of space" to accommodate illegal migrants, adding that it "strains public resources and drives down jobs" that "hurt all Americans".

Speaking after Trump's address Tuesday, the Kentucky Republican said Trump's plan "simply builds on earlier legislation" that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and other Democrats supported in the past.

The dispute over wall funding - with Mr Trump demanding $5.7 billion just for this year to help build it - led to a stalemate in Congress over funding for parts of the government.

The partial government shutdown reached its 18th day, making the closure the second-longest in history. Also noteworthy: The contingent of active-duty USA troops at the border has been more than halved, dropping from a peak in the fall of about 5,900 to about 2,350 last week. More than 38 million Americans who rely on food stamps could see them reduced should the shutdown continue into next month.

He also has failed to persuade most Americans that he's right. Farmers and small businesses won't get loans they need. With Trump and the Democrats holding their ground, there's no telling when it'll end. But that legislation didn't authorize the kind of wall Trump has always been advocating since he launched his campaign. It also had a mandatory employment verification system to ensure all USA employees are authorized to work in the country.

Trump Addresses AmericaPresident Trump makes his case for a $5.7 billion wall between the US and Mexico. In fact, undocumented immigrants had 50% fewer criminal convictions than native-born Americans. The president, with his recent efforts, may have bought himself a bit more time for negotiations.

"Democrats in Congress have refused to acknowledge the crisis..."

On Monday, the Trump administration agreed to let the IRS pay out tax refunds if the government shutdown extends into filing season.

"The federal government remains shut down for one reason and one reason only because Democrats will not fund border security", he alleged.

Pelosi and Schumer also emphasized an obvious fact: On the first day that the 116th Congress was in session, House Democrats, who now hold the majority, passed government spending legislation that was almost identical to what Senate Republicans passed at the tail-end of the 115th Congress. And even if it did, it hasn't even been passed by Congress yet.

"There is a growing humanitarian and security crisis at our southern border".

Just a couple days later, Trump repeated the same notion.

Inside a home in Edinburg, 67-year-old Mexican-American Sylvia Ramirez took notes during Trump's speech and the response by Democratic leaders.

The President's address was the latest in a series of public appearances - including a Cabinet meeting, a statement in the White House briefing room at which he was flanked by border patrol officers, and a news conference last week - in which Mr Trump simply reiterated his demands without offering any concessions.

There is no excuse for hurting millions of Americans over a policy difference. New York City, for example, has the nation's largest population of immigrants living in the country illegally - about 500,000 - and a year ago had only 289 murders among a total population of 8.5 million people, according to preliminary data.
