The South African global striker spent two years at Leeds United in England.

Former Leeds United and South Africa striker Phil Masinga has tragically died at the age of just 49, it has been confirmed.

And he earned his place in South African history by scoring the decisive goal against DR Congo which secured qualification for the World Cup in France in 1998.

South African football association Danny Jordaan says he has sweet memories of Masinga.

"It is with great sadness that the club has learnt of former striker Phil Masinga's passing", said a statement from the Elland Road club.

Masinga was also a member of the victorious 1996 African Cup of Nations squad.

With tributes pouring in from family, friends, Safa, supporters and former clubs such as Leeds, the details of his funeral are yet to be announced.

South Africans are mourning the death of Bafana Bafana star Phil Masinga, who passed away after a long illness. We'll never forget your goal that took South Africa to their first World Cup in 1998.
