29 January, 2019, 08:38
U.S. Senator Kamala Harrislaunches her campaign for President of the United States at a rally at Frank H. Ogawa Plaza in her hometown of Oakland, California, U.S., January 27, 2019.
The Daily Wire reported that "Harris, who responded by hinting that her office was too big to notice, did not apologize for her lack of leadership over what happened as she appeared to suggest that she was a victim of the whole ordeal", in a recent interview with CNN's Jake Tapper.
A child of Jamaican and Indian immigrants, Ms. Harris was, in 2010, the first woman of African and Indian descent to become California's Attorney-General, and, in 2016, the second African-American woman in the U.S. Senate.
One close ally, California congressman Ted Lieu, said: "She embraces the future, not the past, and is the person we need to move America forward".
Harris allegedly had an extramarital affair with San Francisco's former mayor - Willie Brown - over 20-years ago.
Harris addressed her detractors briefly in her launch speech, saying: "I am not flawless".
The answer, which was succinct and direct, showed that Harris is not only aware of the criticism of her time as district attorney of San Francisco and attorney general of California, but is prepared to take it on. Campaign aides say she has drawn inspiration from Shirley Chisholm, a NY congresswoman who in 1972 became the first black woman to run for president from a major party.
It is a burgeoning field that may ultimately feature dozens of candidates seeking to oust President Donald Trump.
"If Kamala Harris wants people who care about dismantling mass incarceration and correcting miscarriages of justice to vote for her she needs to radically break with her past", wrote Prof Bazleoni.
With her sights now on the presidency, its left many wondering what kind of tactics she'll employ during her campaign.
She added, "I$3 t is wrong...for this administration to then trade the idea that, okay, well, maybe we'll let the kids stay, but not their parents".
She still has a long road ahead of her, with nearly two years to go until the 2020 election, but her supporters say she can not afford to take her foot off the pedal.
Her speech made it clear Harris is eager to take on Trump, but the California senator faces tough competition in the Democratic primary. One of the biggest challenges for Harris will be standing firm against vicious attacks from her detractors - not least Trump, a man known for seizing upon the weaknesses of opponents he has labelled "Crooked Hillary" and "Crazy Bernie". She said her platform will include several progressive policies like debt-free college and "Medicare for all", which would allow Americans to opt into government-run health coverage.
