In Sunday's attack, approximately 10 missiles were fired at targets in al-Kiswah, according to Syrian media.

Attacks have been rare in Damascus since Syrian government forces captured the last rebel-held neighborhoods and suburbs of the capital a year ago.

Israel's military said its Iron Dome interceptor system shot down a rocket that had been fired at the northern part of the occupied Golan Heights on the Syria frontier on Sunday.

Israel rarely publicly confirms its strikes in Syria.

The Israeli military refused to comment on the reported strike.

It said that the attack triggered Syrian air defense systems.

A military spokeswoman told AFP the rocket was sacked from Syria.

Social media said that the airstrike followed just hours after an Iranian cargo plane had touched down in the Damascus International Airport, based on airport flight information, and that another flight from Iran had been on its way to Syria on Sunday afternoon but "turned back right after Israeli airstrikes". The town now is under the control of Turkey-backed Syrian opposition fighters.

"Warehouses containing weapons for Syrian regime ally Hizbullah and Iranian fighters are located in that area", Abdel Rahman said.

A military source indicated that air defence systems in the country's south have successfully repelled an Israeli air attack, preventing the attackers from achieving any of their objectives.

The attack, launched by four Israeli F-16 jets, did not damage the airport and there were no casualties, the control center was cited as saying.

Israel has accused Iran of seeking to establish a military presence in Syria that could threaten Israeli security and attempting to transfer advanced weaponry to the Hezbollah terror group in Lebanon.
