No emergency declaration to end U.S. govt shutdown

US Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Senator Chuck Schumer say President Donald Trump just got up and walked out on their negotiation US Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Senator Chuck Schumer say President Donald Trump just got up and walked out on their negotiation

One powerful Republican ally, Senator Lindsey Graham, tweeted after talks with Trump: "Mr. President, Declare a national emergency NOW".

"It's absurd, the arguments that are being made right now", he said.

Politicians are due back in Washington from their states and congressional districts in the new week.

President Donald Trump denied "chaos" in the White House amid the ongoing government shutdown, claiming on Saturday that there's "almost nobody in the W.H. but me". "But to understand that plan you would have to understand the fact that I won the election, and I promised safety and security for the American people".

Both Pelosi and Schumer have since repeated the phrase "Trump Shutdown", but it's not actually the most accurate description of what's going on. Later Saturday, he supplemented a day's worth of tweets by telephoning in to Fox News Channel's "Justice with Judge Jeanine" Pirro from the White House to continue his public relations blitz for the wall.

Trump on Friday however backed off a series of previous threats to end the deadlock by declaring a national emergency and attempting to secure the funds without congressional approval. He said he's giving Congress a chance to "act responsibly".

Congress approved a measure Friday to give federal workers back pay when the shutdown ends. By a vote of 411-7, the House passed a bill requiring that all government workers receive retroactive pay after the partial shutdown ends.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, travelling in Abu Dhabi, claimed that morale is good among USA diplomats even as many work without pay. "We're doing our best to make sure it doesn't impact our diplomacy", he said.

Nearly half of the State Department employees in the U.S. and about one-quarter overseas have been granted a leave of absence during the shutdown.

President Donald Trump said yesterday he would not declare a national emergency "right now" to end a standoff over border security that has idled large swaths of the US government, all but guaranteeing that he will preside over the longest shutdown in USA history. Democrats oppose that step but may be unable to stop it.

Overall, Democrats appear somewhat more conciliatory than Republicans.

The constitution provides the Congress, not the White House, the power of the purse, and lawmakers are not eager to cede their role to the president, even for a wall many Republicans support.

With negotiations regarding the border wall fruitless so far, Trump is considering declaring a national emergency to get the wall built if lawmakers won't approve the necessary funds, according to The New York Times. This, as polls suggest Trump is getting most of the blame for the shutdown.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request to clarify who is now in the White House with the president. A person familiar with White House thinking said that in meetings this past week, the message was that the administration is in no rush and wants to consider various options.

Pelosi argued that Trump is merely trying to steer attention away from special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation and other White House problems. "Yes", Meadows told reporters this week.

Trump originally pledged Mexico would pay for the wall, which he says is needed to stem the flow of illegal immigrants and drugs.

He said on Cavuto Live that the same language about border security from President Trump was used in years prior to his presidency on both sides of the aisle.

"This lawsuit is not complicated: We do not believe it is lawful to compel a person to work without paying them", the federation's president, Randy Erwin, said in a statement.
