Hyundai takes off-roading to next level with Elevate walking vehicle

By blending electric auto and robotics technology, the Hyundai Elevate feels like a step toward sci-fi.

Created to address the need for rapid and efficient disaster assistance, the Hyundai Elevate is built on a modular EV platform that can switch between different bodies for specific situations.

It can move in any direction, walk at different speeds, and the legs can be stowed if the driver wants to leave the disaster zone and take on a normal flat road.

Officially, Hyundai says this first-ever vehicle with moveable legs would be flawless for disaster relief, the legs not only providing height and ground clearance but suspension as well, making it the first Ultimate Mobility Vehicle (UMV).

The Elevate makes use of four moveable legs to "traverse terrain beyond the limitations of even the most capable off-road vehicle", according to the Korean manufacturer. Elevate is designed with four mechanical legs with wheels for feet and can roll along on extended legs or retract them to be driven like a vehicle.

In addition to unveiling its latest concept vehicle, Hyundai also presented its future mobility road map at CES 2019. "Elevate can drive to the scene and climb right over flood debris or crumbled concrete".

The Hyundai Elevate has been designed with Sundberg-Ferar, located in Metro Detroit, a product innovation studio specializing in innovation strategy, design research, industrial design, user interface, engineering and prototyping. When the terrain gets a bit bumpier, it can switch to active driving suspension or transform into a walking robot, mimicking mammalian or reptilian style gaits.

Elevate can climb a five-foot (1.52-meter) wall, step over a five-foot gap, walk over diverse terrain, and achieve a 15-foot (4.57-m) wide track width.

Hyundai claims that vehicles based on the concept could one day be used to save lives in response to natural disasters, such as earthquakes, forest fires or floods. For example, people living with disabilities that don't have access to a ramp could hail an Elevate that could walk up to their front door, level itself, and allow a wheelchair to roll right in. "The possibilities are limitless.", mentions John Suh, VP and Head, Hyundai Cradle.
