"Scotland's red meat industry is a major contributor to the health and well-being of those who maintain a healthy and balanced diet in which red meat provides consumers with essential nutrients, including iron, zinc and B vitamins", he said.

It insists that not only would people be healthier, but it would also reduce the damaging effects of climate change, soil erosion, deforestation and loss of biodiversity.

In the report, the researchers say feeding a growing population of 10 billion people by 2050 with a healthy and sustainable diet will be impossible without transforming eating habits.

The report from a panel of nutrition, agriculture and environmental experts recommends a plant-based diet, based on previously published studies that have linked red meat to increased risk of health problems.

Based on a 2,500 calories a day diet, the targets consist of a daily combined intake of up to 60 per cent in carbohydrates, such as whole grains, 15 per cent in protein, such as meat, eggs and fish, with the remainder coming from fruit and vegetables, added fats and added sugars.

While permitting variations based on local need and culture, the diet allows for an average of just seven grams of red meat per day and 500 grams of vegetables and fruits.

No more than 29g of chicken should be eaten a day, with one and a half eggs per week being the max consumed.

Our food choices matter, and the current way we eat is threatening the future of our planet and our health.

"While this is uncharted policy territory and these problems are not easily fixed, this goal is within reach and there are opportunities to adapt worldwide, local and business policies".

An global panel has released the first scientific targets for healthy diets worldwide through sustainable food production that will require Indians to increase their protein consumption and curtail their intake of potatoes.

Generally, the diet suggests "a diversity of plant-based foods", and limited meat, dairy and other animal products.

The Lancet editor-in-chief Richard Horton said, "We can no longer feed our population a healthy diet while balancing planetary resources".

Findings from the experts are reported in the latest issue of The Lancet medical journal.

Ultimately the new diet could globally prevent up to 11.6 million premature deaths per year, according to its creators.

To that end, the Commission has delivered the first full scientific review of a sustainable food system and what actions can be taken to support and speed up food system transformation.

"Sheep numbers have reduced by half since 1990 while we have maintained similar levels of production and doubled the value of our exports".

"Everyone has a right to their opinion and the freedom to choose how they live and what they eat, but let's deal in scientific facts, not blind rhetoric and emotive language".

He added that the food group intake ranges recommended by the Commission were flexible enough to accommodate different agricultural systems, cultural traditions, and individual dietary preferences.

As of now, about a billion people are ravenous and another two billion are eating excessively of the wrong food, causing epidemics of obesity, heart disease, and diabetes.

Complying with the diet would mean people in the United Kingdom slashing their meat consumption by 80%, free-market think tank The Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) said.

Christopher Snowdon of the Institute of Economic Affairs in London said the report "reveals the full agenda of nanny-state campaigners".
