Bill Timmons, CEO of Hacienda HealthCare, resigned Monday after reports emerged last week that a patient gave birth despite being in a vegetative state for at least a decade.

Hacienda HealthCare operates the long-term care facility for the developmentally disabled where the woman gave birth on December 29 to a baby boy, according to earlier reporting by KPHO, which also revealed that the Native American woman has been in a vegetative state for 14 years after a near-drowning.

Since the birth, Hacienda has placed a policy of requiring female employees to accompany male employees to female patients' rooms, most likely pushed forward by the Arizona Department of Health Services, which said in a statement that it has implemented "heightened safety measures" that include "increased staff presence during patient interactions as well as surveillance of patient care locations".

"From what I've been told she was moaning and they didn't know what was wrong with her", an unidentified source told CBS Phoenix affiliate KPHO-TV.

The woman was injured in a drowning incident over ten years ago and has been in a vegetative state since.

Police are conducting a criminal investigation but have, as yet, declined to share any details, though local media have reported that subpoenas for DNA samples may be forthcoming. Hacienda HealthCare, which has 40 programs that serve more than 2,500 people a year in Arizona, according to its website, did not immediately respond to calls and messages seeking comment.

"We have recently become aware of a deeply disturbing incident involving the health and safety of a Hacienda resident".

It is "already conducting a comprehensive internal review of our processes, protocols, and people to ensure that every single Hacienda resident is as safe and well cared for as possible".

Police have made no arrests so far and it remains unclear if they have identified any suspects yet in their investigation.

It happened at Hacidena Healthcare, a facility for medically fragile children, teens, and adults. That staff member was sacked.

A mother of another patient at the facility posted a sign to her daughter's door saying that no men, including staffers, are allowed in until the police find the rapist.
