Florida sheriff says he'll fight suspension

The Miami Herald reports that the governor will name retired Coral Springs Police Sgt. Gregory Tony as Broward's interim sheriff.

Tony, a former Coral Springs Police Sergeant, will serve as Broward County's first African-American Sheriff. Ron DeSantis, Attorney General Ashley Moody and four staffers experienced "mechanical issues" and made a pit stop in St. Petersburg on Friday as the new governor made his way to Fort Lauderdale.

Sheriff Israel has repeatedly failed and has demonstrated a pattern of poor leadership.

"He failed to protect Floridians and visitors during the tragic Fort Lauderdale International Airport shooting in 2017", DeSantis said.

Seventeen students and staff were killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School almost a year ago.

The Sun-Sentinel explained the Florida Constitution gives the governor the authority to suspend public officials for "neglect of duty" and other causes.

During a tour of the Everglades with reporters, he noted that he's not a "climate change denier", although he also took the time to say that neither is he appreciative of the "climate change believer" label.

Israel countered that other mass shootings did not result in the suspension of top law enforcement officials, including the bloodbath in 2016 in Orlando at the Pulse nightclub.

Israel also discussed plans to get his title back after the Florida Senate reconvenes March 5.

Israel was criticized for touting his "amazing leadership" during a CNN interview in the days after the shooting.

Israel said he "whole-heartedly reject (s) the statements in the governor's executive order as lacking both legal merit and a valid, factual basis".

Israel has been the target of public outrage for his department's handling of the Valentine's Day shooting a year ago in which 17 students and teachers were killed by a former student.

A state-appointed commission has identified multiple failings in Israel's agency's response to the shooting. The delays, along with a lack of training, communication problems and Israel's policy that did not require deputies to confront active assailants, contributed to the number of deaths and injured victims, the commission found.

BSO should revise its active assailant policy to make unequivocally clear that deputies are expected to immediately seek out an active assailant and that "containment" is not the policy of BSO.

Israel had faced fierce criticism for almost a year over his agency's response to the rampage that claimed the lives of 14 students and three staff members. The arrogance displayed over the past 24 hours by the board is indicative of how they have operated for the better part of the last decade-without transparency and with disdain for the people of South Florida who have been made to suffer through lost summer after lost summer.

His lawyer, Stuart Kaplan, said that not only would Israel fight the governor's order, but he would run for re-election when his term ends in 2020.
