Despite the focus on the border with Mexico, most immigrants living in the US without authorization entered with visas and then stayed on when their documents ran out.
The two leaders said this in a joint statement late Monday: "Now that the television networks have made a decision to air the president's address, which if his past statements are any indication will be full of malice and misinformation, Democrats must immediately be given equal airtime".
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer responded to the news about Trump's speech by demanding that Democratic Party leaders be given an equal amount of time to respond to what he says. All networks carrying Trump's address have agreed to carry the Democrats' response.

Other Democrats have also expressed dismay with the networks' decision to provide Trump with wall-to-wall coverage for his immigration speech when they failed to do the same thing for President Barack Obama when he discussed immigration. "Some of them have told me that we should have done it".
