"'I have chose to run and will be making a formal announcement within the next week", she said on the show, which airs Saturday.

She was one of a handful of Democrats who met with Trump during the presidential transition, amid speculation that she could become United Nations ambassador or secretary of state.

"I have made a decision to run and will be making a formal announcement within the next week", Gabbard told a CNN TV news anchor for a show that airs Saturday.

Another Democrat is jumping into the quickly forming 2020 Democratic presidential primary contest.

Gabbard said "the issue of war and peace" would be the main focus of her campaign. "There are a lot of challenges that are facing the American people that I'm concerned about and that I want to help solve", she told Jones, listing issues such as health care, criminal justice reform and climate change.

Gabbard, a co-Chair of the powerful House India Caucus, was recently re-elected for the US House of Representatives from Hawaii for the fourth consecutive term.

An Iraq war veteran and member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Gabbard is also the first Hindu member of Congress.

Rania Batrice, who was a deputy campaign manager for Bernie Sanders in 2016 and is now a top aide to Gabbard, will be the campaign manager, Batrice says. But the last three general elections have been won by the major party candidate who staked out the more dovish position on America's foreign wars-so don't count her out right away. She later resigned her post as DNC vice chair to become one of Vermont Sen.

Gabbard's declaration follows a December 12 appearance on MSNBC's "Hardball" in which she said she was "seriously considering" a presidential run. She has visited early primary and caucus states New Hampshire and Iowa in recent months and has written a memoir that's due to be published in May.

Soon after Trump was elected in 2016, Gabbard met him amid rumours that she may be offered a job in his administration.

Ever since her 2017 visit to Syria, Gabbard has been condemned for daring to seek firsthand accounts rather than blindly trusting the MSM narrative, so on Friday the pundits were again off to the races, with fresh accusations of Assad-sympathizing.

The congresswoman then endorsed Sanders for president, becoming one of the few members of Congress to do so.

She had a run-in with Harris this week, accusing her of religious bigotry for her opposition to a nominee for federal judgeship because he belonged to a Catholic organisation called the Knights of Columbus.

"Tulsi Gabbard has an even bigger problem than her lack of experience - it's that she has no base of support", Republican National Committee spokesman Michael Ahrens said.

Thus far only former Maryland Rep. John Delaney has mounted an official presidential bid.
