The Chang'e-4 lunar probe, launched in December, made the "soft landing" at 0226 GMT on January 3 and transmitted images since then, state broadcaster CCTV reported.

The image from the China National Space Administration shows the first image of the moon's far side taken by China's Chang'e-4 probe. The machines took each other's portraits. The rover is powered by solar panels.

The panoramic view of the far side of the Moon captured by the Change'e 4 lander.

The picture shows the grey moonscape, the lander and the rover with the track marks it left behind.

This is the second Chinese probe to land on the moon, following the first Yutu rover mission on its Earth-facing side in 2013.

Scientists noted, "We have completed the preliminary analysis of the lunar surface topography around the landing site based on the image taken by the landing camera".

CLEP said: "The ground receiving image was clear and intact, the Chinese and foreign scientific loads were working normally, and the detection data was valid".

Instead, signals are sent from the lunar surface up to a relay satellite called Queqiao, which launched in May 2018 and is hovering in an orbital "parking spot" from which it can communicate with Earth.

"From the panorama, we can see the probe is surrounded by lots of small craters, which was really thrilling".

The mission demonstrates China's growing ambitions as a space power to rival Russian Federation, the European Union and the U.S.

Wu also revealed that China has plans to build a research station at the South Polar region of the moon.

"The Chang'e-4 landed at an altitude of almost minus 6,000 meters".

One of the biggest challenges for the mission is getting information back to Earth.

The space administration also released a 12-minute video of Chang'e 4's landing utilizing more than 4,700 images taken by an on-board camera.

Chang'e-4 landed in the Von Karman Crater within the South Pole-Aitken Basin.

In contrast with previous images from the landing site, the panoramic image has been colour-corrected by Chinese researchers to better reflect the colours we would see if we were standing there.
