Bungie has broken away from Activision, but what happens to Destiny?

'Looking ahead, we're excited to announce plans for Activision to transfer publishing rights for Destiny to Bungie.

"When we first launched our partnership with Activision in 2010, the gaming industry was in a pretty different place". While it's hard to separate decisions made by Bungie versus Activision, some players anxious that the latter's influence on the game had resulted in the heavy push of Eververse.

The success of that nine-year stretch is apparent, with Bungie saying Destiny has "delivered a combination of over 50 million games and expansions to players all around the world".

The planned transition process is apparently already underway.

This prompted a response by Destiny director Luke Smith, who stated on Twitter that Bungie is "not disappointed with Forsaken".

He said the reality is setting in they're not going to get paid, but as essential personnel they're expected to still show up. The Miami Herald reports the terminal will reopen for flights Sunday morning and close again at 1 p.m. that day.

While the announcement may have come as a surprise to some, this was probably inevitable, given the tensions that developed following the release of Destiny 2 and the Forsaken expansion. What followed (four years later) was Destiny and more recently Destiny 2 being developed by Bungie and published by Activision. Going forward, Bungie will own and develop the franchise, and Activision will increase its focus on owned IP and other projects. It wants to assure players there is more of that on the way, and that this transition is only part of a brighter future for Destiny.

Either way, self-publishing will bring its own challenges, and sales of Destiny 2 haven't been what Bungie or Activision hoped for.

Seattle-area game developer Bungie will soon become the sole publisher and handler of the Destiny online-shooter series that it developed in partnership with publisher Activision. Head down to the comments section and let us know! There is now no word on whether Destiny will remain on the Blizzard's Battle.net launcher, an integration that happened in October of 2017. Here's to you, to us, and to all of the adventures that await in 2019. This will include more seasonal experiences in the upcoming months.

It's not hard to see why investors would sell their shares in ATVI, Destiny is a hugely popular video game franchise.
