Brexit: SNP will seek to revoke Article 50 after deal is defeated

Anti-Brexit protesters outside Parliament as Jeremy Hunt warned that failing to pass Mrs May's deal could mean no Brexit ‘Irresponsible nonsense’: Tory minister slammed over comments about rise of far-right

Britain, the world's fifth largest economy, is due to leave the globe's biggest trading bloc in under 80 days but parliament looks likely to reject May's negotiated agreement next week, increasing the possibility of a disorderly Brexit.

The MP for Bassetlaw told Sky News' Sophy Ridge he won't be the only one from Jeremy Corbyn's party to vote with the Tories when the prime minister's deal goes before parliament on Tuesday.

Ian Blackford said MPs must take control of the Brexit process and ensure a no-deal outcome is avoided.

Tory MPs including Sir Geoffrey Clifton-Brown and Sir Edward Leigh said they would support the Government in the meaningful vote.

"The leaders are much more savvy than people think - they can see what is happening in the United Kingdom, and they were left unconvinced that it would be possible to get a trade deal done quickly because the British government remains opaque on what it wants".

"I think parliament will take control of this process, will insist that we pursue the option of no Brexit", he added.

"I think the sensible thing to do now is to put this back to the people, let's have a People's Vote", he said.

"I don't like the prospect of a no-deal".

The Cabinet ministers were speaking as MPs prepared for the third day of debate in the House of Commons ahead of next Tuesday's crunch vote, with Home Secretary Sajid Javid opening proceedings which are expected to be dominated by the issue of migration.

Pressed again on what happens if the deal is defeated, Barclay said he suspects the Commons would support something "along the lines of this deal".

In a significant shift of tone apparently created to win over hardline Brexiteers who have set their faces against Mrs May's deal, Mr Hunt warned that defeat next week would not necessarily provide MPs with the opportunity to choose their preferred version of Brexit.

Asked whether MPs could bring forward legislation to revoke Article 50, Cable told BBC TV: "Yes that is exactly what will happen and that is exactly what we should be doing because it would be absolutely outrageous and unforgivable if the chaotic circumstances of a no deal were allowed to happen".

He has since become a vocal critic of the Government's Brexit plans, urging ministers to take a tougher stance in divorce talks.

Mr Blackford said a so-called People's Vote on the terms of Brexit, with an option to stay in the European Union, was another "sensible" option to break the deadlock.

More than 100 Conservative MPs have already declared their intention to vote against May's deal.

Labour is also set to vote against the deal, but leader Jeremy Corbyn has resisted growing calls from within his own party to get behind another European Union referendum, insisting a general election is still his top priority if the deal is rejected.
