The Mediterranean diet, which focuses heavily on fruits, vegetables and fish, has been named the best for 2019 by a panel of health experts who confirm it's easy to follow, nutritious and effective for weight loss and preventing diabetes and heart disease. It consists of plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, healthy fats like those found in olive oil and fatty fish like salmon and sardines, and nuts and seeds. But according to new data released by U.S. News and World Report, one regimen reigns superior. Last year's ranking showed the Mediterranean diet tied with the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension diet (also known as DASH), the government-backed plan that emphasizes foods low in sodium but rich in potassium, magnesium and calcium - all of which help lower blood pressure. It also limits red meat, salt, and candies. For 2019, the Mediterranean diet took home the top award. The diet has always been linked to many health benefits, including lower risks of cancer and heart disease, better kidney health and a healthier gut. It's more flexible than fully vegetarian or vegan diets.

Although the popular Keto diet ranked high for fast weight loss, it landed way down on the Best Diets list - tying for number 38. Eating a diet that's mostly vegetarian while also allowing for an occasional burger or steak to satisfy a craving can help with weight management and improve overall health, Blatner says. The DASH diet had been ranked as the No. 1 overall diet by U.S. News and World Report for the previous eight consecutive rankings.

Weight Watchers - now called WW - was fourth.

WW's Freestyle program applies points values to foods, with higher points for foods high in saturated fats and sugars, and lower points for foods with high levels of protein.

Move over Keto diet, there's a new top diet in town this year. Although created to help people lose weight, experts say its focus on healthier living makes it a smart overall diet to follow.
