After Holiday Lull, Trump-era Action Returns to White House

‘Could be a while’: Trump refuses to budge in shutdown standoff White House calls Democrats' plan to end shutdown 'non-starter'
Anna Jefferson | 03 January, 2019, 10:12

No one budged at President Donald Trump's closed-door meeting with congressional leaders Wednesday, so the partial government shutdown persisted through Day 12 over his demand for billions of dollars to build a wall along the us border with Mexico. Pelosi said Tuesday that Democrats would take action to "end the Trump Shutdown" by passing legislation Thursday to reopen government.

But Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell shot down those hopes, saying Mrs. Pelosi's plan isn't going anywhere.

Democrats, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D - N.Y.) and House Speaker-designate Nancy Pelosi (D - Calif.) are expected to attend alongside Republican leadership. They said Senate Republicans would be "complicit with President Trump" in continuing the shutdown if they choose not to move forward with the House Democratic plan. The other would provide temporary funding for Homeland Security, through February 8, allowing talks to continue over border security.

The president indicated he would not drop his demand for $US5 billion ($NZ7.5b) in wall funding that triggered a partial government shutdown now in its 12th day.

"We do have a crisis on the border right now".

"If they knew they couldn't come through, they wouldn't even start", Trump said at the meeting, joined by Cabinet secretaries and top advisers, including Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump. "He could not give a good answer". Vice President Mike Pence in recent days approached Democrats with a compromise offer of $2.5 billion for border security and wall improvements. Democrats believe pressure will mount on Republicans as the shutdown drags on, the aide said.

In one of a series of false or unsupported assertions, Trump said that there were between 30 million and 35 million undocumented immigrants in the United States, roughly three times larger than the estimate of most experts. That number is roughly triple the estimate his own Department of Homeland Security offered several weeks ago. "Both parties must work together to pass a Funding Bill that protects this Nation and its people - this is the first and most important duty of government".

Throughout the 2016 presidential campaign, Trump told voters that drugs, criminals, and terrorists were flooding into the USA across the Mexico border.

Pelosi was nearly certain to win Thursday's House vote for speaker, a position she held for four years from 2007, when she made history as the first woman ever to rise to that post. Trump could actually make this worse by offering something like a DACA deal and daring Democrats to reject it.

At the Cabinet meeting, Mr Trump said he would keep the government partially shut for "as long as it takes" while he seeks wall funding in any legislation to keep the government funded.

McConnell has said Senate Republicans will not approve a spending measure that Trump does not support. "We are in a crisis situation, '" one of the officials said, relaying Nielsen's remarks, which were aimed at the Democratic leaders in attendance.

He also parried complaints from Democrats who've called the wall immoral by remarking, "Then we have to do something about the Vatican, because the Vatican has the biggest wall of them all".

As a result, on December 22, about one-quarter of the government ran out of money.

It would also include another measure to fund the departments of Agriculture, Interior, Housing and Urban Development and others closed by the partial shutdown. Major agencies like the Pentagon and the Health and Human Services Department have already been funded through the end of the fiscal year September 30, thanks to spending bills passed by Congress earlier in the year and signed by Trump.
