Virgin Galactic has successfully launched a tourism rocket ship into space for the first time - with Sir Richard Branson hoping a commercial flight will take place by March 2019. The spacecraft reached an altitude of 51.4 miles, or almost 83 kilometers, before performing a slow backflip and gliding back to land at Mojave.

The spaceship then ignited its engines and continued traveling at about 3 times the speed of sound. While this measurement for the edge of space is still up for debate, many authorities are considering it to be the actual distance to the line between space and the Earth's atmosphere. Rather than getting us back to the moon though, the main objective of these missions is to make a flight into 'space' commercially available.

Mr Branson, who said he personally put up $1bn toward the roughly $1.3bn development costs for Virgin's space businesses, said he viewed competition with Mr Bezos and others as a race, though passenger safety was the top priority.

With two seasoned pilots in the cockpit - Mark "Forger" Stucky and C.J. Sturckow - the vehicle known as SpaceShipTwo was ferried to an altitude of about 43,000 feet by a mothership.

Looking to the future after the successful flight, Branson talked about the possibility of using his space plane to link global cities, offering orbital space flights, or potentially even building a Virgin hotel in space.

As to whether it made a "space" flight is debatable. The astronaut designation is in keeping with US military and NASA pilots who when they fly above 80 kilometers are reclassified as astronauts.

If one accepts that VSS Unity reached space today, it is the first time an American-built spaceship was launched from American soil since the final space shuttle flight, STS-135, in July 2011.

After Virgin Galactic's successful space test flight, company founder Richard Branson is looking forward to the future - and it may come sooner than you think.

It comes at a time when NASA is still forced to rely on Russian Federation to fly its astronauts to orbit and faces criticism that its aversion to risk has replaced the youthful audacity that helped it put men on the moon.

Since the company's inception in 2004, Virgin Galactic have made bold claims about its expected timescales for making space tourism a reality.

The trip marked the plane's fourth test flight after earlier attempts had succumbed to setbacks.

The United States, however, is the only country that defines space as a location 80 km above the Earth's surface.

"So sometime next year when the testing is finished it will move there".

As the plight of Virgin Galactic shows, ending government's long-held monopoly on human spaceflight has been hard. "Space is not cheap", he said. He used an engagement ring that had just flown on the VSS Unity, which means the ring earned some honorary astronaut wings for its journey.
