Third Canadian arrest 'doesn't fit patterns' of previous two: Trudeau

Third Canadian detained in China - report Third Canadian arrested in China as Huawei diplomatic rows continue
Patty Aguilar | 20 December, 2018, 08:27

The newspaper, the arrest is reported to the canadian Ministry of foreign Affairs.

Trudeau said during a news conference Wednesday he does not believe the third detention of a Canadian has any ties to the other cases, calling it "a very separate case".

Canada's National Post was unable to confirm the identity of the new detainee but cited "third-party sources" who have spoken to the individual's family and said the detainee is not a current or former diplomatic official such as Kovrig or an entrepreneur such as Spavor.

The tension between Canada and China after the temporary arrest of Huawei chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou could intensify. Meng was arrested at the request of authorities in the USA, where the 46-year-old executive is wanted for allegedly violating sanctions against Iran.

For its part, China has now granted Canada access to both Spavor and Kovrig.

Although Canadian officials have not directly tied the detentions in China to Meng's arrest, former Canadian ambassador to China, David Mulroney, finds that unlikely.

"Escalation or very strong political statements can actually end up being counterproductive", Trudeau said.

Adrian Zenz, an independent China researcher and lecturer at Columbia International University, told The Telegraph: "This [the third arrest] indicates that China is willing to escalate this delicate situation even further, and shows how important Huawei as a company is for the Chinese state".

Third Canadian detained in China - report

Meng Wanzhou is accused of evading USA sanctions against Iran.

"Far from being secretive, Michael's work was open for all to see, Chinese officials first and foremost", ICG president and CEO Robert Malley has said in a statement, referring to the detainee's past and present roles.

"Huawei has been working with Canadian operators on a number of pre-commercial trials in the lead up to 5G", said Scott Bradley, a spokesman for Huawei Canada.

Conservative MP Erin O'Toole told the Canadian Press Wednesday that the situation still raises deeper questions about the safety of Canadians amid the ongoing Canada-China dispute. "The Canadian government can not order a judge to release Ms. Meng, ' the security voices are going to trump them", the source said. "One detention is bad enough".

Meng has been released on bail as she awaits an extradition hearing, though she has been ordered to remain in Canada in the meantime.

China has said that both men are being investigated on suspicion of "harming state security", bringing that they may spend years in Chinese custody and be charged with espionage.

"There are millions of dollars, billions of dollars at stake in technology and in communications infrastructure, there is also the extraordinary imperative that Canadians and people around the world expect to be kept safe and free from interference and cyber attacks", Trudeau said.
