The private company attempted to launch a Global Positioning System satellite for the Air Force from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station's launch pad 40 at 9:21 a.m. until it was scrapped because of "upper level winds", according to a Twitter post. However, he added that future GPS III missions may feature attempts to recover the first stage, depending on flight results from Sunday's mission.

The satellite's launch was initially planned for Tuesday, but failed due to technical issues.

The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, scheduled to launch a U.S. Air Force navigation satellite, sits on Launch Complex 40 after the launch was postponed. The success of the attempt of the launch of the security space mission gave a significant victory for Elon Musk and the whole company as a whole who spent years to break into the market which quite appeared to be dominated by Lockheed and Boeing Co. This marks the US-based aerospace company's first USA national security mission to date.

"There simply was not a performance reserve to meet our requirements and allow for this mission to bring the first stage back", Walter Lauderdale, mission director at the Air Force's Space and Missile Systems Center (SMC) Launch Enterprise Systems Directorate, said during a prelaunch call with reporters on December 14. It dropped the lawsuit in 2015 after the Air Force agreed to open up competition. It is three times more accurate than the previous system and up to eight times stronger in its anti-jamming capability.

The next year, SpaceX won an Dollars 83 million Air Force contract to launch the GPS III satellite, which will have a lifespan of 15 years.

The launch would be the first of 32 satellites in production by Lockheed under contracts worth a combined $12.6 billion for the Air Force GPS III program, Lockheed spokesman Chip Eschenfelder said.

According to Eschenfelder, the next GPS III satellite is set to launch in mid-2019 and additional satellites will be tested at Lockheed's processing facility in Colorado.
