Number of Patients with Suspected Cases of Flu Rise Sharply

Doctors: Flu season only beginning in Michigan CDC: Widespread flu activity reported in Georgia
Anna Jefferson | 31 December, 2018, 10:14

It's flu season, and according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Georgia is one of the sickest states in the nation right now.

Flu cases are on the rise around the United States, according to a weekly snapshot ending December 22 put out by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), but so far they have not reached epidemic levels. Following a slow start to the flu season, the U.S. has seen 3 weeks of influenza-like illness activity levels at above the national baseline of 2.2%, flu activity reported as regional or widespread in 24 states and Guam, and an increase in respiratory specimens testing positive for flu at clinical laboratories across the country.

More southern border states have increased activity.

The state confirmed Michigan's first flu-related death last week.

Influenza A viruses have been dominating in the United States since the beginning of October, the CDC said, although influenza B viruses are circulating, as well. There have been 11 total flu-related deaths among children in the 2018-2019 season.

In October, a jet bridge collapse in Pakistan injured one person, according to media reports. Southwest says remaining passengers safely exited the plane using air stairs.

Higher risk people can experience flu complications, such as pneumonia, which can result in hospitalization or even death, says the CDC.

The flu season basically lasts for as many as 16 weeks, on an average, typically.

According to the CDC, the symptoms can include fever and/or chills, cough, runny and/or stuffed nose, headaches, and fatigue. Also at high risk are adults 65 and older, pregnant women, residents of long-term care facilities and people with medical conditions including weakened immune systems, asthma, heart disease and diabetes. But the most important step to stop seasonal flu, according to the CDC, is for everyone 6 months or older to get vaccinated.

Temperatures during the New Year holiday and the rest of the week are expected to be relatively low, and Chuang urged people who plan on participating in New Year's Eve festivities to protect themselves against the flu by wearing masks and frequently washing their hands.

Doctors, nurses, and pharmacists all say 'that it isn't too late to get your flu shot in 2018'.
