Representatives for the Academy, which organizes the Oscars, did not immediately respond to EW's request for comment on Hart's decision to step down.
In a video posted on Thursday evening, Hart says that The Academy has asked him to apologize for homophobic tweets (see bottom of article) that re-surfaced after they announced he would host the 2019 Oscars.
He said: "I sincerely apologise to the LGBTQ community for my insensitive words of the past". In the passionate Instagram video, Hart tells the world, "So I just got a call from The Academy".
Hart had initially posted a message to Instagram responding to the controversy in which he said, "Stop looking for reasons to be negative". In an accompanying video, a shirtless Hart lounging in bed warily said he wasn't going to "let the craziness frustrate me".
"This is not the first time this has come up, I've addressed it, I've spoken on it. And if he doesn't, I don't think we should hold him accountable, I think we should just remember and forgive him".
"I am blown away simply because this has been a goal on my list for a long time", Hart wrote on his Instagram page. If you choose to not believe me then that's on you....
"If u want to search my history or past and anger yourselves with what u find that is fine with me", he writes. "Guys, I'm nearly 40 years old, if you don't believe that people change, grow, evolve as they get older, I don't know what to tell you".
The comedian has since deleted the tweets, but that wasn't before screen captures began circulating online. I am truly happy people... there is nothing that you can do to change that. While Hart's words are hurtful and damaging, it's safe to say that comedians cross this line quite often.
It's unclear what will happen with Hart's hosting gig.
