CDC wants you 'Say no to raw cookie dough' this holiday season

If you find it hard to wait until your cookies are fully baked before taking a taste though, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention has a warning you should hear before you indulge.

Flour and raw eggs especially can contain bacteria and salmonella respectively.

"While Nestle Toll House refrigerated cookie dough products contain heat-treated flour and pasteurized eggs, these products are not meant to be consumed raw and should be baked as directed prior to consumption", says Nestle spokeswoman Lauren Brady.

"Children can get sick from handling or eating raw dough used for crafts or play clay, too", according to the CDC.

"Even a small amount of contamination can make someone very sick", says Medus.

Most people know raw eggs can give someone salmonella, which can cause people to develop diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps 12 to 72 hours after being exposed to the bacteria.

"When you're making cookies, often the recipe calls for raw eggs", Lindsay Malone, a registered dietitian with the Cleveland Clinic, said in 2016.

However, not all public health experts agree that raw cookie dough is unsafe.

Follow label directions to refrigerate products containing raw dough or eggs until they are cooked.

Do not taste or eat any raw dough or batter, whether for cookies, tortillas, pizza, biscuits, pancakes, or crafts made with raw flour, such as homemade play dough or holiday ornaments.

Several flavors of Duncan Hines cake mix are part of the recall, including Classic White, Classic Yellow Cake, Classic Butter Golden Cake, and Confetti Cake varieties.

Cookie dough ice cream sold in stores contains dough that has been treated to kill harmful bacteria. Because flour is a powder, it can spread easily.

Flour is typically a raw agricultural product.

Clean up thoroughly after handling flour, eggs, or raw dough by washing your hands thoroughly and washing bowls, utensils, countertops, and other surfaces with warm, soapy water.
