Sessions resigns to Trump 'at your request'

"At your request, I am submitting my resignation", Sessions wrote in the Wednesday letter to Trump.

Former Attorney General Eric Holder said on Twitter he worries Session's exit could negatively impact Robert Mueller's investigation.

In a tweet, President Donald Trump named Sessions' chief of staff Matthew G. Whitaker as the new acting attorney general.

Sessions' removal is significant because, due to his recusal from the Russian Federation investigation, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein has overseen Special Counsel Robert Mueller's probe. Trump belittled Sessions but, perhaps following the advice of aides, held off on firing him.

"Mueller has come up to a red line in the Russian Federation 2016 election-meddling investigation that he is dangerously close to crossing", wrote Whitaker in August of 2017.

"According to NBC News, Voters Nationwide Disapprove of the so-called Mueller Investigation (46%) more than they Approve (41%)".

Lion Air jet had damaged airspeed indicator on last 4 flights
The Lion Air investigation comes after Indonesia's government ordered an inspection of all Boeing 737 Max 8 planes in the country. Black box data recovered from the crashed Lion Air jet showed the plane had an airspeed indicator problem on its four flights.

Sessions's recusal stems from the fact he was an active supporter of Trump's 2016 campaign. The president said Sessions' chief of staff, Matt Whitaker, would replace him for now, with a permanent replacement coming later.

Sessions' departure has been expected.

He continued: "We thank Attorney General Jeff Sessions for his service, and wish him well!" "While the constitution grants the president the authority to dismiss his cabinet members, we will be keeping a close watch on the future of the special counsel's investigation and the impact of the appointment of a new Attorney General".

Subsequently, it was announced that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein would no longer oversee the Mueller investigation.

Department veterans have expressed concerns that Trump's repeated public attacks on Sessions, the Justice Department and the FBI could cause lasting damage to federal law enforcement.

"Attorney General Sessions has selflessly dedicated more than 40 years to serving the people of Alabama and the nation", Cornyn said in a statement.
