"On Election Day, it's the voice of the people that roars", DeSantis told supporters at his election party and called it "the one day the elites don't call the shots ... and they don't set the agenda".

Gillum told supporters in Wakulla that Tuesday is a choice between the "Trumpizing of America" and working together.

Grammy-winning singer Rihanna is all in for Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum receiving the last-minute support needed to help him become Florida governor.

Gillum fell short in his bid to become Florida's first African-American governor.

Democrats, playing catch-up after a net loss of 13 governorships and more than 900 state legislative seats during the eight-year Obama administration, fielded their largest slate of legislative candidates in more than three decades.

Joyner said he moved to Florida to vote in the race.

"I sincerely regret that I couldn't bring it home for you", he said, referring to his campaign slogan. Gillum said he paid cash for his share of a rental house shared with Corey and others in the 2016 Costa Rica vacation.

DeSantis Pins Hopes On GOP Turnout
Republican candidate Ron DeSantis has defeated Democrat Andrew Gillum on Tuesday to become the next governor of Florida. During the campaign, Gillum repeatedly launched accusations of racism against DeSantis , which DeSantis firmly denied.

The dispute further elevated Gillum's national profile, while also drawing attention back to the FBI investigation.

DeSantis, 40, an Iraq War veteran, decorated military lawyer and former Florida congressman, defeated the Tallahassee mayor by a razor thin margin Tuesday night, with the two candidates neck and neck in the heated contest for the majority of the evening.

Although DeSantis heavily emphasized his support of Trump before the primary, he scrubbed his campaign website of most Trump references and toned down his association with the president through most of the general election. He beat Putnam by 20 percentage points.

In the dying days of the campaign, Trump branded Gillum a "thief" and accused him of running a corrupt city, without presenting evidence for his attack.

DeSantis, meanwhile, was plagued by accusations of racism following remarks he made the day after his primary victory in August. Fox News' Decision Desk still has projected that race as too close to call. He said health care is a priority for him because of a pre-existing medical condition.

The stark differences between the two candidates and the negative nature of the race were crystallized in two vitriolic debates. "I don't think we want to stop our economic momentum", DeSantis said.
