That result, considered less likely even within the White House, would embolden the president as he launches his own re-election bid. Some 35 Senate seats were in play, as were nearly 40 governorships and the balance of power in virtually every state legislature.

So the first reason we can trust the polls in 2018 is because they weren't actually wrong in 2016, at least as far as the popular vote is concerned.

Donald Trump has been beating the drum against migrants from Central America. I feel confident about women, and many men, who say 'My daughter can now do this and that and this because of you.' I don't spend too much time thinking about it ... "It's all fragile", he said.

Trump heaped praise on Mike DeWine, the state's current attorney general and Republican candidate for governor, who is deadlocked in a neck-and-neck race with Democrat Rich Cordray, the former director of President Obama's Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. This is to say nothing of all the things - violence, hatred, anxiety, long-term negative economic trends - for which politicians have some responsibility but about which no one much expected them to do anything.

Federal and state officials have been working for almost two years to shore up the nation's election infrastructure from cyberattacks by Russians or others seeking to disrupt the voting process. Like other Democrats across the country, Spanberger emphasized protecting people with pre-existing conditions from being denied coverage or charged more by insurers.

The political realignment, defined by race, gender and education, could re-shape USA politics for a generation. "I wouldn't say it's as important as '16, but it's right up there".

The airtight House contests are scattered across the country: Among them, Democrat Abigail Spanberger is challenging Republican Rep. Dave Brat in Virginia's 7th Congressional District; Democrat Danny O'Connor and Republican Troy Balderson are rematching in Ohio's 12th Congressional District; and Democrat Harley Rouda is challenging longtime Rep. Dana Rohrabacher in California's 48th Congressional District.

"None of us are indispensable, but some of us are just better at what we do", she said.

Trump's Republican coalition is increasingly older, whiter, more male and less likely to have a college degree.

"It's a very good turnout", said William Harkins, chief election officer at a polling station in Arlington, Virginia.

But as he touched down in IN for the second leg of his final-day tour, even Trump conceded that the House may slip from his party's grasp. "But it'll be a start". In an interview, she said Trump's doubling down on divisive immigration messages like ending birthright citizenship and sending troops to the U.S. Trump and his backers have called it "an invasion" - though the group of a few thousand people, including mothers and children, remains hundreds of miles away - and suggested without proof that there are criminals and terrorists in the crowd of those fleeing violence and poverty. But the fundamental reality of American political life - an irrelevant Congress, an embattled president who does things unilaterally while pushing back against partisan investigations, a rightward-leaning high court - is unlikely to be altered by what happens on Tuesday. Trump declared in his typical style: "If she gets in, Georgia goes backwards".

Turnout is expected to be high.

The outcome is clouded by the dramatically different landscape between the House and Senate.

Polling experts FiveThirtyEight now project that there is an 86% chance - or six in seven - that Trump will lose control of the House. The Democrats would need to win two more Senate seats to gain control of the Senate.

The short version? If the midterms go badly for him, and Trump's party loses control of the House of Representatives, he will be left in a deeply uncomfortable position, unable to pass legislation without help from his political opponents.

He said that shows how "warped" some voters are in their thought.
