Israeli Defense Forces killed at least five Palestinians and a commander from the Palestinian resistance group Hamas in the illegally blockaded Gaza Strip on Sunday, Palestinian health officials said.

A Hamas official said violence erupted when a group of its armed men were fired at from a passing vehicle belonging to Israeli security forces and Hamas members gave chase. It was not immediately clear where the others had landed.

The Israeli army said its forces carried out a "security operation" in the Gaza Strip, followed by violent clashes.

Iseaeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu cut short a visit to Paris and was returning to Israel after intense fighting broke out between Israeli forces and Palestinian fighters in the Gaza Strip and a string of rocket sirens wailed across southern Israel.

Israeli Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman held security consultations at military headquarters, his office said. The Iron Dome missile defense system intercepted at lease two projectiles during the subsequent exchange of fire.

Netanyahu told reporters that it was "the right step" at the moment and that he was committed to restoring quiet along the Israel-Gaza frontier and preventing a humanitarian crisis in the coastal Palestinian territory.

Netanyahu has come under criticism from members of his right-wing government for his decision to allow Qatar to provide money to the Hamas-run Gaza Strip to pay for salaries and fuel to ease an electricity crisis.

On Friday, Palestinian civil servants began receiving payments after months of sporadic salary disbursements in cash-strapped Gaza, with $15 million delivered into the enclave through Israel in suitcases by Qatar.
