The seven-member boy band, who have built a huge global following since they formed in 2013, were due to appear on TV Asahi's flagship Music Station show on Friday evening. "A t-shirt design worn by a [BTS] member caused a controversy", it stated.

After BTS cancelled their flights to Japan, the designer behind the t-shirt issued an apology. The broadcaster's statement also apologized to viewers who had looked forward to the band's appearance, which had been scheduled for Friday.

Despite the controversy over the top, some Japanese fans expressed disappointment that the BTS performance had been cancelled.

Universal Music said it will continue to support BTS but confirmed their appearance on the live music show Music Station was cancelled.

Korean fans believe that TV Asahi's decision to "postpone" BTS's appearance was a strictly political move, as now, Korea and Japan are facing political friction.

It is unclear when exactly Jimin wore the shirt in question, but pictures of him in it started circulating online in October.

The shirt features the words "Patriotism Our History Liberation Korea" repeated next to an image of an atomic bomb's mushroom cloud (though it's hard to tell, it appears to be the Nagasaki explosion) and a picture of Koreans being liberated from Japanese colonialism.

Japan became the first nation to suffer an atomic bombing on 6 August 1945, at Hiroshima. Japan ruled the Korean Peninsula from 1910 until the end of Asia's involvement in World War II, which was brought about when Japan surrendered following the USA's use of two atomic bombs.

Claiming that the T-shirt instigated anti-Japanese sentiment, the media outlet even described the group as "anti-Japanese". Some Korean media reports say it was worn last year while others say he wore it on 15 August this year to mark Korea's Liberation Day.

Last month, Tokyo reacted furiously after South Korea's top court ordered a Japanese steel giant to compensate victims of wartime forced labour programmes.
