Disgraced Australian opener David Warner walked off the field mid-innings after being sledged during a Sydney grade game on Saturday, reports said.

Warner, who is serving his 12-month ban from global and state cricket for his role in the ball tampering scandal, is representing Randwick Petersham and his team was playing a match against Western Suburbs at Pratten Park in Ashfield in Sydney.

Warner returned to the crease after a few minutes and went on to make 157, his second century since the start of the club season last month.

The controversial left hander was embroiled in a sledging incident with Jason Hughes, brother of the late tragic Australian batsman Phillip, who died in 2014 after being struck by a ball in a state game for New South Wales.

When asked by Peter FitzSimons whether it was Jason's comments that caused the walk-off, Warner said: "yes". However, neither Warner or the two umpires are believed to have heard Phillip Hughes referenced in the comments.

'I'm not going to go into the details however David was taken aback by the comments and thought they went a little bit too far, so he made a decision to remove himself from the game, ' she said.

"Everyone has their own opinion but there is a difference between sledging and abuse", she said.

The former Vice Captain refused to comment after the incident but cricket.com.au reported the altercation began as goading from the Western Surburbs player before the attack turned "nasty" and "personal".

"Look, I'm not going to go into the details".

"He removed himself firstly because he didn't like what he was hearing and where that could've been taken". It was very hurtful'. It is a terrific game, but I can't get over how many people are talking it down at the moment and gee it really worries me.

Saturday's incident comes ahead of a much-anticipated review into the culture within Cricket Australia.

Warner is serving a 12 month ban alongside Steve Smith after Australia's unfortunate ball tampering fiasco in March.
