The United States launched air strikes on the extremist group "Al-Shabab" in Somalia, killing about 60 militants.

"We also assess that this airstrike did not injure or kill any civilians", the US Africa Command tweeted.

There has been no independent confirmation to the attack.

The Nov. 21, 2017, airstrike targeted an al Shabab training camp in southern Somalia and occurred during a time when there was an uptick in the number of airstrikes against the militant group. That is on pace to surpass last year's attacks against the group.

The US Africa Command spokesman said the air strike had no link to the anniversary of a massive bomb that killed almost 600 people in Mogadishu. Al-Shabaab has several thousands of fighters and has proven to be resilient over the years, carrying out suicide bombings on high-profile targets in the capital, Mogadishu, and other cities as well as more conventional attacks against Somali, US and African Union forces.

Al-Shabab, which has been fighting to establish an Islamic state in Somalia for nearly a decade, continues to hold parts of the country's south and central regions after being chased out of Mogadishu several years ago.

Under President Donald Trump, the U.S. military has increased its involvement in the fight against al-Shabaab, which is affiliated with al Qaeda and the deadliest Islamic extremist group in sub-Saharan Africa.

More than 500 American personnel are partnered with Somali forces and AMISOM, which aims to counter the threat from Al-Shabaab jihadists.

According to a report by Daily Monitor, the strike took place close to where the United States forces train Somali troops in partnership with the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM). "The enemy attacked us with 34 explosions, but only one hit one of our convoys", Koshin said.
