Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu has said Pompeo would provide information about the case after Khashoggi, a United States resident, vanished during a visit to the consulate on October 2 to collect marriage documents.

But the theory was widely dismissed among Mr. Khashoggi's friends, human rights advocates and some on Capitol Hill, who noted that Saudi officials had denied his death for two weeks - including assertions by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman last week and the King himself on Monday.

"The president is willingly and knowingly doing the counter messaging for the Saudi kingdom", noted Washington Post national security reporter Greg Miller in a tweet on Tuesday. The Turks have said they suspect Saudis dispatched from Riyadh killed the self-exiled Khashoggi and dismembered his body within hours after he arrived at the consulate to get a legal document he needed to remarry.

"Unfortunately, the search at the residence [of the Saudi consul general] did not happen last night".

Turkish officials, on the other hand, have been releasing evidence and brutal recordings of Khashoggi being beaten, drugged, murdered and dismembered in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. "I don't want to get into his mind, but it sounded to me like maybe these could have been rogue killers".

Trump called Khashoggi's disappearance a "terrible situation".

Prince Mohammed, 33, a son of King Salman, consolidated his control in June 2017 when he was named Crown Prince to replace his cousin, Mohammed Nayef, who was sacked.

Pompeo will travel straight to Turkey to hold talks with his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu on Wednesday, Ankara said in a statement.

Turkish police have identified five suspects - four of whom have ties to the Saudi crown prince - in the investigation launched into the disappearance and alleged murder of prominent journalist Jamal Khashoggi, according to a US media report.

Following Trump's comments about the possibility that "rogue killers" might have been involved, several U.S. media outlets reported that a Saudi probe was expected to paint Khashoggi's death as a result of a botched rendition and interrogation.

Turkish police believe he was killed by a special team of 15 Saudi officials, but Riyadh has dismissed the claim as "baseless".

"I know what I'm going to do".

Al-Otaibi, the Saudi consul general, left Istanbul for Riyadh on Tuesday, Reuters reported.

"I just spoke with the king of Saudi Arabia, who denies any knowledge of what took place".

Speaking to reporters in the White House, Trump said King Salman's denial "could not have been stronger".

Turkish investigative agencies have said that he was brutally killed inside the consulate.

"I hope that we know the truth but I'm very horrified at the prospects of what those truths are", Rezaian said from The Washington Post newsroom.

Police searched the Saudi consulate and said they found evidence Mr Khashoggi died there, according to a senior Turkish official. Asked whether he discussed potential ramifications if top Saudi officials are implicated, he said, "We talked about the importance of completing the investigation".

President Trump has previously said he does not want to halt a proposed $110 billion arms sale to Saudi Arabia - as some in Congress have suggested - because it would harm the U.S. economically.
