After confirming another case of the rare, polio-like disease, the CDC now faces at least 28 more likely cases across the United States.

A rare illness that can lead to paralysis or death, acute flaccid myelitis (AFM), is making headlines across the nation, with one of the newest cases confirmed last week by a hospital in Jacksonville, Florida. Nationwide, 62 cases of the disease have been confirmed this year.

Many confirmed cases have been children, with the average age 4 years old.

As of now, Dr. Carlson said AFM appears to affect children and he's not seen a case with teenagers. The disease seems to attack the child's nervous system, specifically the spinal cord. Most of the cases involve children, and while the CDC says it doesn't know the cause of a lot of them, it is urging parents to practice disease-prevention steps, such as ensuring their children are up to date on vaccines, washing their hands, and protected from mosquito bites. AFM causes weakness in the arms or legs and generally occurs in children.

The CDC has not confirmed the ten cases in IL are actually AFM yet, but IDPH expects confirmation in the next couple weeks.

"Until you actually identify the virus or whatever microbial agent it is with a laboratory confirmation test you can not be 100 percent certain", he said.

"I am frustrated that despite all of our efforts we haven't been able to identify the cause of this mystery illness", said Messonnier.

Mandatory reporting is required for diseases like West Nile Virus and flu and improves tracking, health officials say. "When you are talking about infants and toddlers they are not fully immune competent", Rohde says.

Christenson understands why parents are concerned and he says prevention is key. But for other viruses, other types of bacteria that can cause an illness very similar to this, we do have ways of preventing them.

The CDC urges parents to be aware of this illness and to seek medical care right away if family members develop sudden weakness or loss of muscle tone in the arms or legs.

"Make sure you keep your children up to date on their vaccines", he said. The CDC says the cause could be a viral or triggered by an environmental toxin, or something else.
