Hip and Knee Surgeons Use Apple Watch to Monitor Patients

Apple Watch can now connect hip patients to doctors More than one million knee and hip replacements occur annually in the US

Up to 10,000 people will be donning an Apple Watch as part of a new clinical study into joint replacement patients.

More than 1 million Americans undergo knee and hip replacements every year, and that number is expected to reach 3.5 million by 2035.

The researchers would use the "Recovery Record" app on iPhone to record the participants' mood, food and goals for 30 days.

It is a multi-year study that aims to enable doctors and their team members to monitor better their patients. Under the partnership, health-tracking data from the Apple Watch will be sent to a new app to help determine why some patients recover faster than others.

The only patients who could use the app, for now, are those who are enrolled in this study.

The app, known as Zimmer Biomet mymobility, will allow surgeons to send education and therapy reminders directly to a patient's iPhone or Apple Watch. The app will guide users through the operation and subsequent recovery period with exercise videos; the app will also include a way for patients to contact their surgeons and care teams in case they have a problem or question.

Apple seems very dedicated in investing in healthcare and has now joined forces with healthcare firm Zimmer Biomet and created an app designed for knee and hip replacement patients.

"We believe one of the best ways to empower consumers is by giving them the ability to use their health and activity information to improve their own care", said Jeff Williams, chief operating officer at Apple.

Apple is working hard to position the new Apple Watch Series 4 wearable as a state of the art health monitoring device. According to the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders, at least 30 million people in the U.S. have some kind of eating disorder, and one hope is the new study reliant on Apple Watch could help researchers predict an episode of binge-eating before it happens.

Currently, patients who will undergo hip and knee replacements have low support.
