Donald Trump threatens to shut US-Mexico border unless migrant caravan stopped

Trump appears to threaten USMCA deal when lashing out at migrant caravan Trump again suggests sending troops to US southern border

President Trump threatened Thursday to send the US military to America's southern border, in order to stop a caravan of more than 2,000 Central American migrants from exercising their legal right to seek asylum in the United States.

In a series of raging tweets, the United States president urged Mexico to "stop this onslaught" and prevent the would-be immigrants from entering the US.

But the idea that Mexico could close its porous southern border - or that the United States would choke off the hundreds of thousands of legal freight, vehicle and pedestrian crossings every day - strained the imagination. He also suggested that it could jeopardize a revamped trade deal with Mexico and Canada, which is waiting to be signed by each country's leader.

More than 2,000 Hondurans are in a migrant caravan trying to reach the United States.

Under this plan, if a migrant evaded the new system and traveled through Mexico into the United States, Mexico's government would in future allow the person to be returned to Mexico, Fox News said, citing an unnamed official.

Mexico's Foreign Ministry said in a statement it would ask the United Nations refugee agency for help coordinating with Central American governments on people seeking refugee status at Mexico's southern border.

As the caravan strung out from Guatemala City to the border, it was unclear whether those who made it the farthest would wait for their countrymen to arrive to attempt a mass crossing into Mexico.

USA officials have already began expressing concerns about the caravan, which also prompted angry tweets from President Trump.

In a Tweet, Trump called the caravan "an assault on our country by Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador".

In April, he said in a meeting with foreign leaders that the U.S.is "going to be guarding our border with our military".

The issue with Trump's threat is that deploying active usa military troops for domestic law enforcement duties is illegal, unless he declares a national emergency and is granted a waiver by Congress.

He said he had spoken with Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez about ensuring the migrants who want to return home can do so safely.

Vaughan stressed that it is a good sign that Mexico is realizing that it has more to gain than lose by cooperating with the US on border enforcement.
