Almost 100 people in 29 states have become sick from antibiotic-resistant salmonella linked to raw chicken, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Wednesday.

Because no common supplier has been found, the CDC can not steer people away from any particular source of raw chicken.

Across the country, 92 people have gotten sick, including 21 people who have been hospitalized.

"The outbreak strain of Salmonella Infantis has been identified in samples from raw chicken pet food, from raw chicken products from 58 slaughter and/or processing establishments, and from live chickens".

Most people recover within a week, but some illnesses can be more severe. The CDC was investigating the source and officials at the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service were monitoring the outbreak.

Earlier this month, at least 57 people in at least 16 states reported salmonella infections after consuming some of more than 6.5 million pounds of contaminated beef produced by an Arizona company.

In July, a salmonella outbreak that infected 90 people across 26 states was connected to raw turkey products.

Meanwhile, the CDC is not advising people to avoid eating properly cooked chicken products, nor telling retailers to stop selling raw chicken.

The CDC cautioned doctors that this strain resists the effects of common antibiotics, and said numerous patients also had urinary tract infections.

Always handle raw chicken carefully and cook it thoroughly to prevent food poisoning. Cook chicken to a temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit to kill harmful bacteria. If possible, use a separate cutting board for raw chicken and other raw meats.

More information can be found on the CDC website.
