Cases of rare, polio-like illness confirmed in Ohio, Pennsylvania

MDH: 7th Minnesota case of AFM 'under review' by CDC Rare health threat captures attention in the heartland
Anna Jefferson | 18 October, 2018, 11:59

Acute flaccid myelitis, or AFM, is rare, but the Centers for Disease Control said it has become more common recently.

A new polio-like illness has spread across 22 states so far this year, impacting children nationwide. The CDC's surveillance shows an increase in AFM cases beginning this August, as well.

Officials with the Oklahoma State Department of Health say that a case from the summer has now been classified as AFM. The condition affects the nervous system and has polio-like symptoms. In 2018, the federal health watchdog confirmed 62 instances of the disease - which causes limb weakness and can paralyse sufferers.

A risky and rare disease that's similar to the polio virus is on the rise in the USA, and it has health officials baffled.

While officials aren't clear of the exact cause, they say it can occur as a result of a variety of viral illnesses including the polio virus, enteroviruses, West Nile virus and adenoviruses.

According to the CDC, scientists have not yet been able to determine who is most at risk for developing AFM. Since 2014, 386 cases have been confirmed, the CDC said on Tuesday.

The cause of the disorder has not yet been identified. CDC has tested every stool specimen from every AFM patient.

WATCH: Six children from Minnesota have been diagnosed with a rare condition that causes weakness or even paralysis in the arms and legs. However, none of the US patients tested positive for polio, and, according to Dr. Messonnier, none of this year's cases have been linked to West Nile virus. "But the appearance of the AFM symptoms is actually very rare".

Meanwhile, Halep will finish the year as the world No. 1 for the second season in a row, the WTA said. I don't know now, but for sure I will take a decision for my health first'.

"We have not been able to find a cause for the majority of these AFM cases", she said.

Symptoms include the sudden onset of arm or leg weakness and the loss of muscle tone and reflexes. CDC experts say the overall rate of AFM is about one in a one million.

"Nobody really knows treatment protocols, they don't know prognosis, and they can't really give parents an answer as to where this is coming from", she said.

But what is particularly confounding doctors is that the number of cases spikes only every other year - with larger numbers in 2014, 2016 and this year - and fewer cases in 2015 and 2017.

States are reporting their cases to the CDC, Messonnier said.

But, if their child is diagnosed, parents should prepare for extensive physical therapy - therapy that isn't always covered by insurance, he said.

Most kids who contract an enterovirus only suffer an upper-respiratory infection, Pardo-Villamizar and Dominguez said.

Other states with cases included Colorado, Illinois and Washington. "You don't need an bad lot of paralyzed children to make this an important problem".
