This morning, the first launch since the possible sabotage was discovered, Russia's Soyuz booster saw its first in-flight failure in recent memory, and the first manned rocket-related emergency in decades.
NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Aleksey Avchinin were inside the Soyuz MS-10 capsule when the rocket carrying it had what NASA described as a booster separation problem.
The duo blasted off from Kazakhstan's Baikonur Cosmodrome aboard the Russian Soyuz MS-10 spacecraft.
"Teams have confirmed the spacecraft separated from the booster and are in contact with the crew as the capsule returns in a ballistic decent mode", NASA reported.
By early Thursday afternoon, Ovchinin and Hague were on helicopters, making their way back to Baikonur, NASA said.
The booster anomaly was identified about 3min 15sec. after lift-off at 4:40a.m. ET, triggering a ballistic re-entry of the capsule and subjecting the crew to higher than normal g-forces. Search and rescue crews are getting ready to reach the expected landing site.
NASA released a statement after a Russian booster rocket on a mission to the International Space Station failed after launch.
"Thank God the crew is alive", said Dmitry Peskov, the spokesman for Russian President Vladimir Putin, when it became clear that they had landed safely.
NASA also added that the crew is in good condition. Everything had been going quite smoothly for Roscosmos ahead of the weird hole discovered in one of their Soyuz spacecraft which was (and still is) attached to the International Space Station.
The 1975 Soyuz-18-1 mission was much further along in its flight when the abort occurred: just under five minutes, amid the rocket's second and third stage separation.
The failure is a setback for the Russian space programme and the latest in a string of mishaps.
The astronauts were to dock at the International Space Station six hours after the launch and join an American, a Russian and a German now aboard the station. The mission would have been Hague's first space flight.
Ovchinin spent six months on the station in 2016. The current crew's stint in orbit will likely be extended following Thursday's aborted launch.
