Jack Sock and Kevin Anderson combined to deliver the sole triumph for their side, overcoming the world's second and third ranked singles players 6-7 (5) 6-3 (10-6) to prevent an opening day shutout for Team Europe.

It was another disappointing night for Djokovic, who teamed up with Roger Federer on Friday when the duo suffered a shock doubles loss to Anderson and Jack Sock.

Djokovic, who has won the last two Grand Slams to move to within six of Federer's record tally, missed the inaugural tournament a year ago due to an elbow injury.

Europe had earlier built their advantage on singles victories for Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, Briton Kyle Edmund and Belgian David Goffin.

But their opponents soon found their rhythm, taking the second set 6-3, with Sock's experience as a three-time doubles major champion shining through on some impressive volley shots and Anderson displaying a strong serve.

It took just three games for Federer to break Kyrgios in the opening set, but he waited even less in the second, breaking him in his first service game of the second set with a masterful combination of play that kept the crowd in rapture.

The exhibition is taking place on U.S. soil for the first time and features 12 of the world's top players squaring off against each other in a three-day showcase which wraps up Sunday in Chicago.

On day two of the competition, Federer will play singles against Australia's Nick Kyrgios, while Djokovic will face off against South Africa's Anderson.

The format calls for shorter matches.

Bjorn Borg's favoured Team Europe are trying to defend their crown against Team World which is captained by the legendary John McEnroe. If the players split sets, they go straight to a 10-point tiebreaker.

Sock and Anderson won the tiebreaker after Federer double faulted to give Team World a key 5-4 lead.

Saturday's matches were worth two points each, but three points per match are up for grabs on the final day, with the first team to 13 points lifting the trophy.
