The tsunami has carried away homes and families, but according to Mr. Sutopo, the search has been suspended until the morning.

The quake hit central Sulawesi island at a shallow depth of some 10 km, the US Geological Survey said.

"The 1.5- to 2-meter tsunami has receded", said Dwikorita Karnawati, who heads Indonesia's meteorology and geophysics agency, BMKG.

Indonesian TV showed a smartphone video of a powerful wave hitting Palu, with people screaming and running in fear.

Earlier, a 7.7-magnitude quake struck off the coast of Sulawesi island.

"Many houses have collapsed", an official with the disaster agency told the Associated Press.

According to reports, an natural disaster measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale hit Central Sulawesi shortly after a 6.0-magnitude quake killed one and injured at least 10 people in Donggala, Central Sulawesi, on Friday afternoon.

Earlier in the day, at least one person lost his life and several others were injured after a 6.1 natural disaster hit the region.

Indonesia rocked by 7.5 magnitude quake, tsunami warning issued
But the latest quake was a higher magnitude than those that killed hundreds on the island of Lombok earlier this year. The tidal waves brought by the tsunami reached 1.5 metres, BMKG chief Dwikorita Karnawati told a press conference.

Dramatic video footage filmed from the top floor of a parking ramp spiral in Palu and posted on Twitter, showed a churning wall of whitewater flatten a large mosque.

The quake struck at 6.02pm in Palu, with an epicentre located 26km north-east of Donggala Regency, Central Sulawesi, and a depth of 11km.

"People are encouraged to remain vigilant", Sutopo said.

And back in August, the island of Lombok was hit by a series of huge earthquakes, resulting in more than 500 deaths and displacing more than 300,000 people.

This handout photograph taken and released on September 28, 2018 by Indonesia's National Agency for Disaster Management (BNPB) shows a collapsed shopping mall in Palu, Central Sulawesi, after a strong quake hit the area. He said information was limited because Palu and Donggala were completely without power.

In December 2004, a magnitude-9.1 natural disaster off the coast of Sumatra triggered a tsunami across the Indian Ocean that claimed 226,000 lives in 13 countries, including over 120,000 in Indonesia.

Indonesia is especially prone to earthquakes due to its location in the Ring of Fire - an area in the Pacific Rim known for its frequency of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
